Interstitials
are basically small pop-up windows that are completely filled
with an advertisement. Such advertising space is offered
by high traffic websites. They generally pop-open when home
pages of these sites are opened. Interstitials
are picking up in popularity primarily because:
a) Research has indicated that interstitials have a higher
click-through rate as compared with banners.
b) Since the size of an interstitial is more than that of
any standard banner or panel, there is more space to talk
about one's product or service.
c) Conventional online ad forms are elements placed on web
pages, next to the content on the web page, which may have
4-5 other banners or panels in some cases. Contrary to this,
an interstitial opens up a new browser window. So, there
is no clutter. The constraint here is that the user's browser
must have javascript enabled. Secondly, some users find
interstitials disturbing and annoying. An
interstitial is commonly used to introduce a new product
or service, for a promotional offer, for occasion
related marketing activity.
